Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez is aiming to react to his snub at the FIFA The Best awards on the pitch against Fiorentina this weekend.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Inter captain Martinez was not among the nominees for the best male footballer of the year at the FIFA The Best awards this year.
The 27-year-old was one of three Inter players to be nominated for the best eleven.
But Martinez was not among the eleven candidates to win the individual award.
This despite the fact that Martinez led Inter to the Serie A title last season, as captain and as top scorer in the competition.
Meanwhile, with Argentina, Martinez won the Copa America last summer. He did so as top scorer in that competition as well, including scoring the winner in the final against Colombia.
Lautaro Martinez Aims To React To FIFA The Best Snub Vs Fiorentina
Naturally, exclusion from the list of candidates for the FIFA The Best award is disappointing for Martinez.
The Inter captain finished seventh in Ballon d’Or voting this year. But he is not even in the top eleven for this award.
Inter President Beppe Marotta hit out at the snub.
The Nerazzurri President called Martinez’s absence “surprising and disappointing.”
And there’s no doubt that Martinez himself is also annoyed to be out of the picture after the stellar year he had.
But the Inter captain’s intention is clear.
Martinez wants to give his response on the pitch. Starting with tomorrow’s Serie A clash with Fiorentina.l
