Inter Milan squeezed past Fiorentina in Monday’s Serie A game marred by controversial decisions made by match officials.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport via FCInterNews, Simone Inzaghi’s charges deserved the victory.

Marin Pongracic’s own goal fired the Nerazzurri 1-0 up before Rolando Mandragora put things back to square one.

However, Marko Arnautovic restored Inter’s lead and set the final score as the home team registered a crucial 2-1 win.

Though Inter had Fiorentina dominated, referee Federico La Penna tainted the reigning champions’ success.

Putting all the blame on La Penna would be unjust.

Indeed, his associates were equally accountable for his erratic calls.

His first assistant should’ve spotted the ball out of play. Instead, La Penna gave Inter the corner, which resulted in the opening goal.

Then, VAR official Francesco Meraviglia called the main referee over an incident inside Inter’s penalty area.

Matteo Darmian’s unintentional handball went unnoticed at first glance.

However, after consulting with the side-pitch monitor, La Penna changed his decision, handing Fiorentina a spot-kick.

Despite his dubious calls, Inter fully deserved the win.

Indeed, they bettered La Viola in virtually every aspect to close the gap on Napoli to a single point.
