Daniele Doveri will be named the referee for Saturday’s Serie A clash between Napoli and Inter Milan.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They note that referee-designator Gianluca Rocchi is exercising maximum caution to avoid controversy.

There is certainly the feeling of a potential title-decider around Saturday’s match at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Inter go into the match top of the table. They overtook the Partenopei last weekend, when Antonio Conte’s team suffered a surprise loss away to Como.

But the Nerazzurri are just one point clear at the top. Therefore, everything is still to play for, with Atalanta also nipping at Inter and Napoli’s heels.

The Lega Serie A has yet to confirm the refereeing team for Saturday’s match.

But according to the Corriere, referee-designator Gianluca Rocchi has already made his decision.

Naturally, given the stakes of Saturday’s match, it was a choice that Rocchi mulled over carefully.

The referee-designator’s aim is to prevent refereeing controversy to whatever extent is possible.

Particularly with recent controversies around penalty decisions in Inter matches – and Antonio Conte’s rage with a decision in the reverse meeting – there is potential for a real firestorm.

According to the Corriere, Andrea Colombo was one major candidate for Saturday’s match.

However, Colombo made a major error in failing to award Juventus a penalty against Cagliari on Sunday.

That is enough to put Colombo out of contention.

Therefore, reports the Corriere, Rocchi is ready to entrust Saturday’s match to Daniele Doveri.
