Daniele Doveri is facing criticism for his decision not to award a penalty for a Scott McTominay foul in yesterday’s Serie A draw between Napoli and Inter Milan.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, argue that the penalty should have been blatant. Even if Inter did score immediately after from a free kick.

Inter Milan players will have felt that it was “justice served” after Federico Dimarco scored from a free kick in the first half of yesterday’s Serie A clash at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

The Nerazzurri players had appealed vehemently for a penalty.

This came about after a shove by Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay on Inter’s Denzel Dumfries.

The former Manchester United midfielder made no effort to play the ball. And he rather blatantly brought Dumfries down in the box.

Somewhat mystifyingly, referee 2025 did not see the incident as a foul, however.

Nor did VAR intervene and tell the referee to go have a second look at the monitor.

Rather, the video assistant evidently did not see it as a clear and obvious error.

But for the Gazzetta, it certainly was one. There was blatant shove and it was in the penalty area, therefore it ought to have been a spot kick.

It was a bit moot, as later in the same sequence, Doveri awarded Inter a direct free kick in shooting range.

Federico Dimarco stepped up, curling his effort into the top corner. Therefore, Inter did take the lead after all from that sequence.

However, it was still a blunder by Daniele Doveri.
