Antonio Cassano Argues Inter Milan Are Underachieving: “They Should Have Sealed The Title Already”
Former Roma, Real Madrid and AC Milan striker Antonio Cassano claims Inter Milan should have put the Serie A title to bed by now.
The Nerazzurri are the reigning Italian champions, and currently lead the Serie A charts. Therefore, they are considered the ultimate favourites to defend their crown. However, Simone Inzaghi’s men are having much more difficulty reaching the finish line compared to last season. By this time last year, Inter’s triumph was a foregone conclusion.
They ended up mathematically sealing the title by beating their arch-rivals AC Milan on April 22nd.
However, this time around, the Scudetto title is seemingly heading to the wire.
Coming off a terrible campaign, few had expected Napoli to challenge for the title this season. Nevertheless, Antonio Conte’s effect did wonders for the Southerners.
The three-time Italian champions are only three points adrift from the top of the table. They could have cut the deficit to just one point, but couldn’t beat Bologna on Monday night.
Therefore, the gap between the league leaders and their closest chasers remained three points.
However, the Nerazzurri fans weren’t too impressed with their team’s display against Parma this weekend.
Inter thought they had the three points in the bag when they headed to the halftime break with a two-goal cushion.
Yet, that contest had an unexpected turn, as the Croaciati pulled off a remarkable comeback to earn a 2-2 draw.
Antonio Cassano Insists Inter Milan Should Have Sealed The Serie A Title
For his part, Cassano felt that Inzaghi had wrongly assumed he had the match wrapped up, as evidenced by his substitutions.
“After the two-goal lead, Inzaghi was convinced he had brought the win home,” said the notorious star during his appearance on Viva El Futbol via FcInterNews.
“He claimed that he had to make four substitutions due to injuries. Tomorrow we’ll see. If someone has a problem, as they can’t heal in two days. In that case, I’ll agree with him.
“But if the players he replaced will play against Bayern, then it means he had made those choices while thinking he had won. I don’t agree with his substitutions.”
Moreover, Cassano believes Inter should have had the title in their hands by now based on the strength of the squad.
However, he notes that Napoli’s transfer market played into the Nerazzurri’s hands.
“For me, De Laurentiis, with the January transfer window, gave Inter a favor. Now the only difficult away game for the Nerazzurri will be in Bologna.
“This evening in the second half, Lukaku couldn’t hold a ball. With the team that Inter possess, the Serie A title should have already been over.”
Inter’s next Serie A contest will be against Cagliari at home. However, we should note that Inzaghi’s team is still fighting on three fronts (Serie A, UCL and Coppa Italia), whereas Napoli only has the Serie A to play for.
