On the eve of Roma vs Inter, Cristian Chivu spoke to Sky Sport about his team’s mindset, Gasperini’s influence, and the emotions of returning to the Stadio Olimpico, a ground tied to his own playing past.
The Inter coach expects a challenging and tactical encounter.
“They’re two teams with quality and ambition,” he said to Sky, with quotes via FCInterNews.
“Both want to climb high and build continuity. We’ll need to be ready in every aspect – it won’t be easy for either side.”
Asked about his counterpart, Chivu was full of admiration for Gian Piero Gasperini, describing him as a source of inspiration for young coaches.
“We can’t change our identity,” he explained.
“We know the value Gasperini brings to his teams. He’s introduced ideas to Italian football that others were afraid to try, and he’s taken Atalanta to the top in Italy and Europe. We all study him.”

Chivu also reflected on his brief time as a player under Gasperini at Inter.
“I enjoyed working with him. We’d switched to a back three and I was playing as a left centre-back.
“His training was intense – I was surprised by my own condition and sharpness. Unfortunately, results didn’t follow, but he just needed time to implement his ideas.”
Returning to the Olimpico evokes personal memories for the Romanian, who played for the Giallorossi during his career.
“Roma was an important chapter of my life,” he admitted.
“Those first four years in Italy made me grow as a person and a player. Coming back to the Olimpico always gives me a special feeling.”
On team news, Chivu confirmed that Thuram is still in recovery.
The Frenchman has been out with a thigh muscle injury since before the international break but his return does not look too far away.
“He’s started light running; we hope to have him back soon,” he said.
Lautaro Martinez remains fit and sharp, though Chivu joked when asked if he’ll start: “Who said Lautaro will play? We’ll see which of the three strikers starts tomorrow.”
