Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries sent an encouraging message to the fans after undergoing ankle surgery on Tuesday.

The Dutch wingback took to Instagram via FCInterNews, posting a picture of himself in a hospital bed with a telling caption.

After spending nearly two months on the sidelines due to an ankle injury, Denzel Dumfries decided to undergo surgery.

Indeed, the procedure took place in London yesterday.

However, after going under the knife, the 29-year-old is likely to stay out of action for a further two or three months.

Therefore, Cristian Chivu cannot expect to have his starting wingback available before the beginning of March.

In the meantime, the San Siro giants are in the market for defensive reinforcements.

Genoa’s Brooke Norton-Cuffy has recently emerged as the club’s top target to replace the former PSV Eindhoven star.

In addition, the Nerazzurri are keeping close tabs on several other players, including Hellas Verona’s Rafik Belghali.

Despite facing a lengthy spell in the pits, Dumfries refuses to lose his optimism.

“Surgery went well,” he wrote on Instagram. “It’s been a tough month with a lot of emotions, but I’m glad the worst is behind me.

“Now full focus on recovery, and I’ll do my best to be back on the pitch as soon as possible!”

Inter will be without their long-serving stalwart in the upcoming Supercoppa Italiana mini-tournament in Saudi Arabia.

On the bright side, Matteo Darmian has overcome his long-term calf problem.

Therefore, he will be at Chivu’s disposal for Friday’s semi-final tie against Bologna.

Yet, Luis Henrique is likely to start on the right wing, as the Italian veteran is lacking match fitness.

As for Dumfries, he’s hoping to recover for March’s mouth-watering Serie A showdown against eternal rivals AC Milan.
