The Italian Referee Association (AIA) have privately acknowledged that Inter Milan were wrongly denied a penalty in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Atalanta, vindicating the fury that prompted the club to impose a complete media blackout following the final whistle.
According to Corriere della Sera, via FCInter1908, AIA officials Gervasoni and De Marco were present in the stands at San Siro.
And, indeed, after the match, they made clear to those around them that Inter had a legitimate case for the spot kick.
Inter 1-1 Atalanta – Referee Body AIA: ‘Should Have Been A Penalty’
The incident followed Scalvini’s late challenge on Frattesi.
Corriere describe the contact as “a belated blow by Scalvini on Frattesi. Identical to a foul whistled against Darmian against Verona in the second star season.”
It is not the first time Inter have been on the wrong end of such an admission.
Last season, following a defeat to Roma at San Siro, AIA officials similarly acknowledged a missed foul by Ndicka on Bisseck.
The parallel will not be lost on the Nerazzurri.
There were two controversial incidents in the closing stages.
The Dumfries contact before Krstovic’s equaliser and the Frattesi penalty appeal.
Indeed, both have reopened the Scudetto race at the worst possible moment.
With the AIA now conceding Inter were right to be aggrieved, the damage is done.
And, therefore, the title fight grows tighter.
Honestly it’s not a pen – would be soft as hell against us,
AND I’m not one to side with refs, in fact I often say corruption is still around however Milan literally just had the exact same incident in their game at Lazio and the result was identical.
So whether you think it’s a pen or not, I’m just glad there for once is some consistency.
Although would be interesting to hear if anybody said “that’s the same as frattesi, better not give it” lol
If we review what the chief of serie A said in the past:
#”i am proud serie A scudetto have different team every season”.
#”i am proud serie A scudetto race is so tight”.
Just to make the scudetto race become tight. Referee decision is use against Inter.
Penalty hand ball Ricci.
Penalty Scalvini.
What a bad serie A management doing. Just to make the scudetto race tight, they make referee decision unfair againt Inter.
I really would be ok if VAR went away. I’m ok with human error. I’m ok with linesmen missing offsides calls by a knee hair. I’d rather accept the on-field decisions and get the rhythm of the games back. VAR and slow motion replay have done nothing but add more controversy and more opportunity for corruption.
