Inter were far from impressed by Icardi’s recent social media posts, eluding to his possible departure from the club. Especially in a difficult time, with the stresses of the transfer market, poor form, and recent links to Real Madrid.

However, the reasons for Icardi’s possible sale are mostly economic. Corriere dello Sport reports, “Inter need to break-even on the next budget and by the 30th of June, they will need to have had made substantial gains, which cannot be totalled yet due to the gains that will come from ticket sales and more importantly, new sponsorship deals. Similarly to last year and it will also most likely be the same for 2018/19, which should be the last year of UEFA’s “observation”, assuming all targets are met until then, according to the settlement agreement”.

Therefore, selling Icardi for a huge sum would balance the books for now and the future. However, it is not so easily done, considering Icardi’s importance to the team, he would need to be replaced with a striker of similar quality and potential, remembering he is still only 24. This strategy is not uncommon, many top European clubs sell their best player to reinvest into the whole team and benefit the budget.
