After the storm between Mauro Icardi and Inter, Gazzetta dello Sport have dedicated an article to remembering all the great captains of Inter.

From Meazza to Zanetti, from Mazzola to Ronaldo and the likes of Picchi, Facchetti, Baresi and Bergomi. Men of inspirational character and disciplined like soldiers, with a sense of belonging that millions of Nerazzurri fans recognise to this day, with nicknames such as Peppin, Sandrino, Cipe, Uncle, Phenomenon, Pupi and others. Captains who never hesitated to put the interests of the club before their persoanl ambitions.

Studying the history of Inter might do some good for Icardi. For instance, he would discover that in 1961, his compatriot, the great Angelillo, was forced out of the club by the newly appointed Herrera who believed that he was too greedy and he did not have the charisma that was needed to help the team, resulting his his sale to Roma for 270 million lire, approved by Moratti.

This is of course assuming that he truly loves Inter, as he has stated on multiple occasions and is willing to earn his title back. Which will no doubt be very difficult to do given Handanovic’s status at the club and the risk of Skriniar and Brozovic into future leaders. But Icardi has youth and history on his should he wish to continue with Inter.
