Man United legend Rio Ferdinand feels that if the Red Devils sign Andre Onana from Inter Milan, they’ll get a modern keeper but not a perfect one.
Speaking to UK based news outlet Vibe with Five, the English former defender gave his thoughts on Onana ahead of an anticipated move to Old Trafford.
As of yet, nothing is done.
Onana is still an Inter player. The Nerazzurri have yet to accept an offer from Manchester United to sell the Cameroonian.
However, the feeling is certainly that things are progressing in that direction.
Reports suggest that it will only be a matter of days before the Red Devils make an offer with the magic number that breaks Inter’s resolve. Then, Onana will become a United player without too much time to waste.
Man United Legend Rio Ferdinand Gives Thoughts On Andre Onana
If United are to sign Onana, they’ll be getting a player who’s won plaudits with his performances for Inter.
Even though the 27-year-old has only been a Nerazzurri player, he’s left his mark.
Onana was arguably Inter’s single most important player on their run to last season’s Champions League final. From his outstanding (and conveniently-timed) saves to his comfort with the ball at his feet, the Cameroonian made his presence felt for Inter.
This is why United look ready to pay a huge fee to sign Onana.
The question, then, is whether or not the former Ajax keeper will be worth it. Inter paid nothing to sign Onana when his contract with Ajax expired last summer. Now, United are ready to break the bank to bring him in.
Legendary former Red Devils defender Ferdinand declared that “He’ll give United more confidence and more ability to play out from the back and I think he suits an Erik ten Hag team.”
“He’s a real modern-day goalkeeper. You see teams pressing him and he doesn’t even panic.”
Ferdinand went on that “He gets the ball in, brings on the press says ‘Come on, come to me’ and when that player comes to him he knows there’s a player free somewhere else and he normally finds them.”
He then noted that “I think there will be mistakes and playing that risky way you do have mistakes and that happens, but it’s about staying true to your beliefs, finding the right balance and remaining calm throughout those periods.”
