Legendary former Inter Milan goalkeeper Walter Zenga feels that at the moment it’s too early to make a judgment on Yann Sommer.
Speaking on his Instagram account, via FCInterNews, the former keeper also said that there are question marks remaining for the Nerazzurri despite the team’s very strong start to the season.
So far this season, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has mostly relied on players who were at the club last season.
Despite the summer having been a very busy one for the Nerazzurri, the coach has slowly bedded in the new signings rather than throwing them straight into the deep end.
However, one player who’s immediately staked his claim on the starting eleven has been Sommer.
It’s little surprise – Inzaghi had to make an immediate transition in goal. All three keepers from the senior squad last season left during the summer.
So far, Sommer has yet to concede a goal in Serie A.
Moreover, the Swiss has made a few outstanding saves to preserve those clean sheets.
But for his part, former keeper Zenga is reserving judgment for the time being.
Walter Zenga “Withholding Judgment” On Yann Sommer At Inter Milan For Now
“For now I’m withholding judgment on Sommer,” Zenga said.
“He has a tricky task ahead of him in trying to take over from Onana and Handanovic.”
Zenga also said of striker Marcus Thuram that “He’s been settling in well I think.”
And of Marko Arnautovic, the Inter legend admitted that “I envy him in some ways. He’s getting his return, something that I was never able to.”
Of the team’s strong start to the season, Zenga said that “Inter are a team who are aware of their strength and quality.”
“There are some question marks,” he then cautioned. “Obviously those have to do with the age of some players like Sommer, Acerbi, Mkhitaryan, Sanchez, Arnautovic.”
“With Acerbi or Mkhitaryan, they’re so professional that age is just a number for them,” he added.
