Lautaro Martinez is four goals away from the record for most Serie A goals scored by an Inter Milan player in a calendar year.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, highlight the significance of the Nerazzurri’s 28 league goals in 2023 so far.

Martinez’s goal against Udinese over the weekend took his league total to fourteen for the season.

That means that the Argentine is six clear of Olivier Giroud in the Capocannoniere race.

And it keeps the 26-year-old’s dream of catching up to the total of 36 that Gonzalo Higuain and Ciro Immobile have reached in recent seasons alive.

But that’s not all. Martinez has also put himself in contention for an historical record at Inter as well.

Lautaro Martinez Closing In On Record For Serie A Goals At Inter In Calendar Year

Martinez had also scored fourteen league goals last season since the start of 2023.

That means that the Argentine has scored 28 in total since January 1st.

That total already means that Martinez is level with two of Inter’s most prolific strikers in recent decades.

Both of Christian Vieri and Diego Milito have managed 28-goal hauls in their best calendar years at Inter.

Therefore, if Martinez scores another in one of the three remaining Serie A matches before the end of the month, he will surpass them.

Then, it’s great strikers from the more distant past who the Argentine will have in his sights.

Giuseppe Meazza scored 29 league goals in two calendar years for Inter – 1930 and 1933.

Therefore, Martinez can catch Meazza. He has matches against Lazio, Lecce, and Genoa in which to do so.

If the 26-year-old can bag three goals from the next three matches, he’ll equal the 31 Serie A goals that Angelillo scored in the calendar year 1958.

And if Martinez can get four and take his total to 32, he’ll equal the all-time record.

That is the number of league goals that Istvan Nyers scored for Inter in 1958.
