Wingback Denzel Dumfries says that he wants to stay at Inter Milan and sign a new contact.

The Dutchman spoke to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, via FCInterNews. He also stated that winning the Champions League is the Nerazzurri’s goal this season.

At this stage, Dumfries’s contract saga has already dragged on longer than most had expected.

For the time being, the 28-year-old is under contract with Inter until the end of next June.

The Nerazzurri, of course, do not want to lose Dumfries on a free transfer at the end of the season.

For this reason, Inter have been working to try and extend the former PSV wingback’s contract for some while. The talks began seriously last winter.

Initially, it had seemed as though Dumfries would not be willing to accept Inter’s offer.

The Nerazzurri have long made it clear that they will not offer wages of more than 4 million net per season. Initially, Dumfries’s demands were higher than that.

Dumfries did not put pen to paper on a new contract during the summer.

Inter had reportedly been hoping to secure the 28-year-old’s future by the end of the transfer window, to avoid another Milan Skriniar situation.

And it is now a couple of months into the new season. And Dumfries still has not actually signed an extension.

Denzel Dumfries: “I Want To Stay At Inter Milan, Champions League Our Objective”

Dumfries explained that the reason he’s yet to sign a new deal is that “There are a still few deals we’ve yet to work out.”

“But I think I’ll sign a new deal soon,” he made clear.

Asked if he expects to stay, Dumfries replied “We’ll see, but in my heart I want to stay.”

Of the important matches against Roma and Juventus on the horizon, Dumfries said that “This month will be very important for us. But we’re ready and charged up.”

“We’re very strong,” Dumfries said. “But Napoli, Milan, and Juve are also strong.”

“It won’t be like last season,” the Dutchman predicted of the title race, with Inter having dominated last time around.

“We always have respect for the other teams.”

Dumfries then said that “The Champions League final is always an objective for us.”

“We’re a strong team,” he said. “As we saw against City.”

“The Champions League is always an objective for this team. I want to win it.”

And as for the disappointment of losing the derby against AC Milan last month, Dumfries admitted that “That was our fault.”

“We didn’t have the right energy,” he said.

“We dropped off too much and it was hard for the defense. Losing the derby is never good.”
