Inter Milan have received a major boost ahead of their Serie A trip to face Atalanta, with Hakan Calhanoglu expected to return straight into the starting line-up.

The Nerazzurri resumed training on Boxing Day to prepare for the highly anticipated clash in Bergamo, with the squad set to depart later today following their final session.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Calhanoglu is ready to reclaim his place at the base of midfield after his recent absence, restoring both control and leadership in Inter’s build-up play.

There is still one open question in midfield. Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Piotr Zielinski are competing for the second mezzala role alongside Calhanoglu.

Indeed, with the Armenian currently holding a slight edge in the selection race.

Another decision facing Cristian Chivu concerns the right flank.

Luis Henrique has started each of Inter’s last six matches, but his most convincing display came only against Como.

As a result, a change cannot be ruled out.

That has brought Andy Diouf back into contention.

The Frenchman was signed from Lens for his ability to carry the ball through midfield, yet has been used primarily on the right since arriving at Inter.

However, it is a position that does not fully suit his natural profile.

Despite this, Diouf has made a positive impact in several substitute appearances.

Including in the Supercoppa, and is now pushing for a chance from the outset.

If that opportunity does not come in Bergamo, it may arrive soon.
