Mateo Kovacic spoke to Inter Channel after the loss to Juventus:
“I think so too that the season is like this; we play well then end up conceiving goals like kids. Today we needed to win and instead we conceded two ridiculous goals. I was the ‘meanest’ on the pitch? Sitting on the bench is no good and I am not happy, so I wanted to show the coach that I wanted to play and lately I do. The best role for me? I am here to play in midfield, but if I play further up it is no problem. The coach decides and he is to be respected, but my preferred role is internal midfield in a midfield of two or three.”
Kovacic then talks about the coming season:
“When we restart with Mancini with calm for the next season we will surely perform better than now seeing as how the coach switch meant we had to work in a hurry. Juventus? They have been winning the last four years, they are used to it. We are missing that meanness and we need to get better. But surely this is the last year they win,” he says with a smile.
Kovacic continues:
“I am young, I need more experience but I need to and I want to improve. We are also working on the defensive parts, but we all want to do better, not just me. If we miss Europe it won’t be due to this game seeing as how we have screwed up several, especially with the bottom teams. By now it is two or three years that go like this, all we can do is work and improve.”
But will he stay at Inter?
“I am happy here and so is my family. Of course I want to play more, this is normal for a player. But I will say that not playing has made me grow, not just as a player but also as a man. I renewed my contract a short while ago, then it is up to the club. I hope to stay here.”

stay here forever kova
kova is good and will be even better but he needs to work on his shots + strenght
We can involve hernanes in a deal to get fekir or kondogbia . A swap plus 8-10m money they won’t refuse
Now if we can just get Kondogbia as his partner. Even offer Medel As part-exchange for a cheaper transfer.
so, it’s internal midfielder.
I used to think that Kovacic was more iniesta-type/mezalla-outside midfielder because of his slick dribble.
but then I started to think that Kovacic is more playmaker-type and his dribble skill just a ‘bonus’ coz he seems like to build up play from the half of the field rather than opened up spaces.
Don’t go to others club.. i am like kova.. the great talent.. new iniesta..
The next captain of inter..
mature kid
i like him
please don’t go anywhere
“But surely this is the last year they win”. Hell yeah. With Motta or Toure,
he could lead our midfield.
The problem is his confident. For now I think he play better in CMF and has talent as regista. If he want to deploy as Trequerista he must has confident to exploit all spaces thoroughly even small space, take a look as Kaka or Totti for exemple. For now I think Hernanes and Shaqiri (lack in decision thought) who seems suitable as trequerista. The one thing for sure Kovacic is one of the best talented young player.
kova doing brilliant in passing deadly, while other mids just passed around like idiots, and then i can defend icardi for being young, and stupid…but sailing in 3 million salary and play like a child against juve? ah-ah…no-no..
very honest assessment of Inter.
as every interista feels, I couldn’t bear to see him leave us this summer
the true captain of inter 🙂
I love to see this kid playing for us for years
In Mancini’s mind, Guarin is inters backbone and kid should sit on the bench to learn the style of gurin. Today kid got starting position because dear guarin is injoured. And the money of selling kid is just handy for the deal of getting yaya.
hopefully we will sell Guarin + Kuzmanovic + Obi for Yaya, not Kovacic! Keep Kovacic.
Kova didnt have a great season. I actually think Mancini benching him for some games was right. It has put pressure on Kova and he has done good recently. The Kovacic today was brilliant! Very unlucky loss today..
Kova was only bad after been benched for long time by Mancini. At the begining of when kova was benched , the is no sign that he should be benched, or at least comparing to most of the inter mates. And also comparing to most of the inter mates, kova is the one that need playing the most due to need to grow and his potential. Kova got benched for long time by mazari and eventually Kova shune as the same kova and was great at the end of last season and begining of theis season and then comes mancini who believes in Guarin and benching Kova for no reason (well, there may be a reason of making sure gurin is the leader in midfiled).
Where is your logic of kova shold be benched to keep presure on him coming from?
Lau is saying exactly what I predicted from kovacic.. Mancini has benched him because he was to soft on the ball and did not seem like he had the grit and willingness to prove himself.. He was too relaxed, and he needed to be angry and fed up from being in the bench, which is exactly what kovacic felt.
When you apply the right amount of pressure you release this kovacic., the one we all know and love to watch.
Great observation.
With all good will I can try to accept your view point that Kova is benched by Mancini deliberately to make him more agressive on every ball.
Still, I see Guarin played very carelessly and damaging and he is a starter as long as he is fit. The same to Icardi as well. If you want to stimulate anyone you need to show first that you are fair. I don’t see this in Mancini. After a good match Kova is then benched but after a bad match Guarin is still a starter. It is humiliating to see this kind of contrast. And IMHO even a not defending Kova is contributing to the team better than Guarin. In the middle part of this season we lost consecutive points with Kova and Hernanes on bench. I can not believe Mancini sacrificed all this to stimulate Kova.
From many discussions I had with interista here at sempreinter and with my view of matches. I can conclude you this, when kova started Mancini said he’s a massive talent and played him many matches until he saw kova does not contribute to the match. Then guarin hit his top form where he produced masterclass of performances week after a week until he went to the usual shit form we all know. So if your a manager you see two players in front of you, one you praised and gave confidence did not produce at any point in time a great performance or a player that had some consistency to his performance but then hit downform, who would you rely on. obviously he takes guarin because at some point he showed some consistency, a coach does not just rely on players past or capabilities, he wants to see which player performs better at his system, it’s a simple as that. Again you might see this discussion that I prefer guarin over kovacic, which I don’t, I am just giving you an insight to my knowledge of the game and explaining how does a coach come to his choice of players.
This kid… one of the very few things I respect in inter nowadays.
Refreshing to see such an honest interview, I think we all agree with Mateo about the goals we let in this season. Hopefully he’ll stay for next season and have some better teammates (Toure and Fekir maybe?)
if kovacic leaves i riot
Grande Kovacic spoken like a true leader
