He has been praising him the last months, now Ivan Zamorano returns to the high praise for Gary Medel. While being interviewed by La Tercera, Zamorano stated that he was very pleased when he saw Medel with the captain’s armband against Atalanta.

Medel reminds me of Makelele. There are so many people who think he’s not good enough, but when you don’t have him on the field, you’ll feel the difference he makes every single match.

Medel is a poor man’s Makelele, at his best. I’m not saying he’s not good enough, but comparing him and Makelele does not seem.. just.
I don’t see that much difference between them. Adding to this, I think he is far faaaaaar better than Gattuso.
To be honest, he’s just ‘almost’ better than Gattuso, he can pass the ball better (although admittedly sometimes his pass are just reckless or vision-less), he also reads the game better than Gattuso, with the same boundless amount of energy that both of them have.
You should’ve compare Medel to Edgar Davids, they were a closer comparison (minus the offensive capability).
Makelele is a different kind of beast, his ability to read the game was at least on par to Yaya Toure, his positioning, his work rate, his willingness (and ability) to cover everyone leaving their post is exceptional. He’s the backbone to successful teams, and Medel has miles away to cover in order to be put in the same sentence with him. I’m talking in my capacity as a football enthusiast, not as an Interista of course.
