If Pioli continues with a 3/5 man defense, Banega can fit in much better under his system because the fortification in defense will allow Banega to play in his free role as trequartista where he belongs. He doesn’t have the proper work rates or fitness levels to play as a CM in Serie A, and he doesn’t have the type of vision required to function as a regista either. I believe Banega could prove successful lined up behind Icardi with little to no defensive responsibilities besides pressing and keeping shape, and allowing him complete freedom in the final third.
