Having returned to Stefano Pioli’s match-day squad to face Bologna midweek, Marcelo Brozović could be set to start this weekend in Palermo.
There are no certainties however, as La Gazzetta dello Sport explained. Over the course of 180 minutes (Chievo in Serie A and Bologna in the Coppa Italia), Gagliardini-Kondogbia has proved to be a convincing partnership in front of the defence.
The Croatian could therefore be handed the opportunity to impress in place of João Mário who played all 120 minutes against Bologna.
Brozović is one of Pioli’s most trusted lieutenants, having featured in all but one of the Nerazzurri’s run of five successive league victories.
He was never substituted in any of those four appearances, whilst he also contributed two vital goals against Genoa.
So far, he has always been fielded in front of the defence. One of those times was alongside João Mário in an anti-Genoa 3-4-3 formation. He also played with Felipe Melo (once) and Geoffrey Kondogbia (twice) in Pioli’s more conventional set-up.
It would make little sense to split the Gagliardini-Kondogbia partnership at this time and so the former Dinamo Zagreb man could be deployed as a trequartista in behind Mauro Icardi on Sunday afternoon.
For now, this is just one of numerous ideas under consideration. However, with Pioli set to continue with his highly effective 4-2-3-1, it could quite easily come to fruition in Sicily.

Gaglia and Kondog reminds me more to Zanetti and Cambiasso since their main task is conquer the midfield and as a shield of our defence.
But they still need lots improvements to get those level, such as work rate, composure, determination, concentration and other champions mentality.
They are young, they can reach those level 🙂

Yes, he is a beast too in Mancio’s first era. But after Motta arrival, he has limited minutes to play, especially in Mou’s era. For treble era, his minutes of play is similar with Palacio, only a decent backup.

i don’t really think he’s any better than mario or brozovic.
JM is pure class, A++++ IQ player and really consistent, but doesn’t have that unpredictability, craziness and South American magic of Banega.
I consider Brozo a CM.
i don’t consider any of our midfielders as a #10. in fact the last #10 we had we jovetic. banega has been quite disappointing tbh.

hate to agree with you but yes he has been disappointing so far. BUT i would keep him around as a super sub or for squad depth. To be honest, i am still not sure how i feel about playing J Mario right behind the strikers. i feel he does better in front of the D. ANd playing Brozo as an AM…i dunno. i guess we will see.

Brozo doesn’t have defensive and ball winning skills and also the beastly body of Kondo.

Gaglia isn’t that much defensive, he’s all around box to box player. Kondo is more defensive than Gaglia

verratti is not really needed. i think a midfield of brozovic-gagiardini-joao mario is the way to go. verratti has also played in 2 man midfield for his whole life.

Verratti is on a whole other level than Brozovic though. If we want to challenge Juve for the scudetto, sure, keep Brozovic in the starting 11. If we want to win another treble, Verratti could be the key player.
veratti is on another level compared to all of our midfielders. its to early to say whether he’s needed or not. but as of right now, i feel our midfield might be one of the strongest in the league.
