Inter were heavily penalised by the referee on Sunday night; even looking beyond the suspensions handed to Icardi and Perišić, not to mention the two penalties which should have been awarded in the first half.

Combined with the feeling of having been treated differently to Juventus, there were also individual episodes which could have changed the course of the match. The first one occurred in the build-up to Cuadrado’s goal, when Chiellini committed a foul on Gagliardini in an attempt to reach the ball. Cuadrado then struck a deadly shot into the top corner.

And then, incomprehensibly from Inter’s point of view, Rizzoli stopped play after Icardi found himself through on goal against Buffon, after winning the ball from Chiellini.
