Arrigo Sacchi Doesn’t See Cristian Chivu As Risky Gamble For Inter Milan: “He’s Ready For Big Step-Up”

Legendary AC Milan manager Arrigo Sacchi feels that Inter Milan have made the right choice by appointing Cristian Chivu as head coach.

Last June, the Nerazzurri parted ways with Simone Inzaghi after four largely successful years. The Italian tactician decided to join Al-Hilal for a lucrative financial package.

The Champions League finalists opted to replace the 49-year-old with a less experienced profile in Chivu.

Many fans and observers considered it a major gamble on Inter’s part. After all, the Romanian’s solitary experience on the senior level stems from his brief spell at Parma at the end of the previous campaign. The 44-year-old had previously coached the Nerazzurri’s Primavera (Under-20 side).

Nevertheless, Sacchi has a different view on the matter.

As the former Milan and Italy boss explains, the appointment of any manager, experienced or not, entails some risk. After all, uncertainty is part of the sport, and perhaps its most compelling factor. Arrigo Sacchi Believes Cristian Chivu Was A Clever Choice From Inter Milan

The 79-year-old thus explains why Chivu’s arrival isn’t riskier than any other managerial appointment.

“The first thing I’d like to say is that Cristian Chivu is not a risky gamble,” argued Sacchi in his latest column for La Gazzetta dello Sport via FcInterNews.

“After his appointment at Inter, I’ve often read and heard this notion, which I don’t entirely agree with. A gamble involves an inevitable risk, and so all coaches are gambles, not just Chivu.

“Who knows how the season will unfold? Only a magician would. I believe, instead, that the Nerazzurri directors chose Chivu after considering the pros and cons that this decision entailed.”

Sacchi Liked What He Saw From Chivu At Parma

The legendary manager was impressed by what he saw from Chivu in his brief tenure at Parma. Therefore, he believes he’s ready for this major step-up.

“It’s true that he’s only had one experience on the Serie A bench: thirteen games in total at Parma. But it’s also true that if someone isn’t tested, you can never tell if he will succeed or not.

“It seems to me that Chivu, given what he showed at Parma, where he saved the team by giving it a clear playing identity and organisation in a very short period, is ready for the big step-up.”
