Inter Milan president Beppe Marotta had reportedly dreamed of appointing Cesc Fabregas as Simone Inzaghi’s successor in the summer.

According to Corriere dello Sport via FCInterNews, the Como manager was Inter’s first option to replace the 49-year-old.

Simone Inzaghi left San Siro only a month after Inter’s catastrophic result in last season’s Champions League final.

With the FIFA Club World Cup on the horizon, the Nerazzurri had little time to find a replacement.

Therefore, Marotta contacted Cesc Fabregas over the possibility of taking over the reins.

However, the Spaniard turned down Inter’s approach.

Fabregas’ rejection might prove a blessing in disguise for Inter.

Indeed, Marotta went for Cristian Chivu instead despite the Romanian’s limited experience in senior management.

Despite lacking coaching experience in Serie A, the 45-year-old has gone from strength to strength this season.

For context, Inter headed into the international break as the joint leaders in both the Champions League and Serie A.

Meanwhile, Chivu will make his touchline debut in the famous Milan derby tonight, hoping to extend Inter’s three-game winning league streak.
