Inter’s hopes of winning the Serie A title are being damaged by their useless subs bench, according to one of Italy’s leading football writers.

Antonio Conte has often come in for criticism this season for not making changes or for making them too late, but in the eyes of Paolo Condo, the options available to the former Italian national team coach are limited.

Inter’s substitutes once again had minimal impact on Saturday as the Nerazzurri were held to a goalless draw by Udinese.

“When we say Conte’s Inter are favourites to win Serie A, we are relying on a general law,” Condo wrote in his latest editorial for Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica, which appeared in today’s print edition.

“That law is that each of us is preceded by our own past, and when it comes to Conte’s past, he has won three Serie A titles and a Premier League title.

“He can do it because of the strength of his starting XI, which reduces his problem of having a substitutes bench that never adds anything.”

Condo also addressed the recent speculation regarding a possible swap deal between Inter and Roma which would see Christian Eriksen and Edin Dzeko exchanged.

Both players have been linked with departures from their respective clubs during this transfer window and Condo concluded his editorial by discussing the situation.

“The idea that negotiations cannot progress due to the different tax regime of the two players gives an idea of the financial difficulties Beppe Marotta is working with.”

A recent report in the Italian media has claimed that Dzeko would like to stay with Roma, while another report has stated that Eriksen could be set for a return to Tottenham Hotspur if Dele Alli departs the Premier League side this week.
