Inter legend Nicolo Berti admits he sees similarities between himself and his midfield successor Nicolo Barella.

Barella has scored three goals and provided 10 assists so far this season, starring again on Sunday as the Nerazzurri defeated Lazio 3-1 at San Siro.

The 24-year-old was recently described as one of Europe’s best midfielders by Claudio Marchisio and is reportedly in line to become Inter’s next captain after Samir Handanovic.

“Barella resembles me in terms of competitive spirit, determination and desire to win games,” Berti explained in an interview with Italian football talk show ‘Tiki Taka’ on Monday.

“Physically speaking we are different: technically he is better than me, I did better without the ball.”

Berti, who spent a decade with Inter between 1988 and 1998, proceeded to discuss Antonio Conte’s side as a whole, who are currently leading the way in Serie A with 50 points after 22 games played.

“We are now first in the standings and now have the Scudetto as our goal, we did not manage the start of the season well and made a bad impression in the Champions League.

“Now we’re aiming for the Scudetto, I think it will be ours.”

Berti then went on claim that the strike force in his Inter side of Ramon Diaz and Aldo Serena was better than the current forward line of Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez.

“Diaz-Serena were better than Lukaku-Lautaro,” he argued.

“Lautaro played an extraordinary match against Lazio though, he went to press all the defenders.”

Inter can open up a four-point gap over AC Milan with a win during Sunday’s Derby della Madonnina.

They have not been top of Serie A this late into the season since Jose Mourinho’s treble-winning campaign in 2010.
