Inter want to make Nicolo Barella a future captain of the club, as reported by the Italian media today.

Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition said the Nerazzurri knew they had a great player on their hands and had already mapped out Barella’s future in Milan.

The 24-year-old could succeed current captain Samir Handanovic – although it was not specified when he might take over the armband – and it is apparently for this reason alone that he does not have a long line of clubs waiting to sign him.

Barella would otherwise be subject to interest from all over Europe, the Milan-based paper argued, given his fantastic performances under Antonio Conte this season.

Real Madrid were recently linked with a move for Barella in the Spanish media, but it seems the La Liga giants’ advances are set to fall on deaf ears.

Barella has made 32 appearances in all competitions for Inter during the current campaign, scoring three goals and providing 10 assists for his teammates.
