Inter can have no excuses if they do not go on to win the Serie A title this season, according to the Nerazzurri’s legendary former midfielder Nicola Berti.

Antonio Conte has the Nerazzurri sitting in first place with a four-point lead over AC Milan in second, following last weekend’s crushing victory in the Derby della Madonnina.

Inter are now most people’s firm favourites to win their first league title since 2010, with Antonio Cassano arguing it would be ‘a disaster’ if they didn’t end up as champions from this position.

Speaking on Inter’s official podcast, Kick-Off, Berti admitted: “We have to bring the Scudetto home this season, even though there’s that other team whose name I don’t want to mention (Juventus) who can bother us.

“We are in the position where only we can ruin it for ourselves.

“We have the best team, the best coach and we’re a few points clear, we can’t throw it away.

“We were already happy after beating Lazio, so after the derby…

“There are still many games to be played, but the two Milan clubs hadn’t been seen at the top together for 10 years.

“Back when I played we were always in the top three.

“The derbies were much more heartfelt but this game was crucial for Inter, as will be all their remaining matches.”

Berti also looked ahead to tomorrow’s pivotal Serie A match at home to in-form Genoa, where Conte’s side will look to extend their lead at the top of the table.

“We’re coming off two wins which could lead to players relaxing, but that mustn’t happen,” he warned.

“We’re in a good position, you could hardly be in a better spot…

“Nothing is ever easy, if we slacken off we can draw or lose to anyone.

“We must play with enthusiasm and slaughter them.”

As part of the same interview, Berti also heaped praise on Nicolo Barella and predicted the 24-year-old would go on to become a ‘Nerazzurri icon’.

He also admitted he was surprised by Lautaro Martinez and Milan Skriniar’s performances during the wins over Lazio and AC Milan.
