Inter captain Samir Handanovic is having the worst season of his entire career, according to a leading Italian journalist today.

Handanovic was involved in another bizarre incident during yesterday’s 1-0 win over Hellas Verona, allowing Davide Faraoni to equalise before the goal was ruled out for a foul.

The Slovenian – who could be replaced by Marco Silvestri next season – cost Inter goals in their previous two games away at Napoli and Spezia and appears to have reverted to his shaky early-season form.

“Inter are about to win Serie A despite lots of structural problems,” Matteo Marani told Sky Sport Italia today.

“Handanovic has had the worst season of his career and this is an issue we must talk about, without taking anything away from the seasons where he was a key player for Inter.”

Inter need just five points from their final five games to become Serie A champions for the first time since 2010.

Matteo Darmian was the hero in the win over Hellas Verona but as Marani explained, there are several Inter players who deserve to be singled out for praise – as well as Antonio Conte’s staff.

“Conte deserves credit for Darmian’s performances,” Marani argued.

“Darmian is similar to Emanuele Giaccherini, another player who was not well fancied and then became a part of Italy’s team (under Conte) at Euro 2016.

“Conte also deserves praise for Alessandro Bastoni’s development, the improvements made by Nicolo Barella, Christian Eriksen’s revival and Marcelo Brozovic…

“Football is also about mentality and Conte’s staff needs to be praised as well.”

Inter could be confirmed as champions as early as Sunday if they beat Crotone (on Saturday) and other results go their way.
