Inter striker Edin Dzeko has explained why he decided to join Manchester City from Wolfsburg during the summer of 2011.

Speaking to Bosnian broadcaster Arena Sport, via FCInterNews, the 37-year-old revealed that he wanted to join the Premier League side so that he could prove himself at the highest level.

Even though Dzeko turned 37 this season, there are few doubts that he remains capable of contributing at a high level.

The Bosnian was widely praised for an outstanding display in the Nerazzurri’s 3-0 Supercoppa Italiana win over AC Milan in January, and his goals have often been important for the team in both Serie A and the Champions League since he joined from Roma in 2021.

Prior to making the switch to Inter, Dzeko had impressed with his displays for the Giallorossi over seven seasons, and before that he twice won the Premier League with Man City in England.

The move to the Etihad from Wolfsburg (where the Bosnian had already won the Bundesliga) was a key step in Dzeko’s career, even if he has proven himself well beyond his time in the English top flight.

“After doing really well at Wolsfburg, I moved to Manchester City because I wanted to really see what level I was at, whether I could play with the best players in the world,” the Inter striker looked back.

“Only in the Premier League would I be able to answer that question.”

“At the time, the coach was Mancini, and I won five or six trophies there,” the striker continued.

“Then came time to go to Roma, I didn’t have the greatest relationship with [then-City coach Manuel] Pellegrini, playing in Italy has always been my dream because the best players always played in Serie A, and my dream was also to learn the language.”

“When I arrived at the airport I was greeted by five thousand fans,” the Nerazzurri man looked back of his move to the Giallorossi, “it wasn’t hard to get used to.”

He also noted the importance of finding an international teammate at the Stadio Olimpico, stating that “Pjanic was also there, and that made it a lot easier for me to adapt.”

Right now, Dzeko’s contract with Inter runs out at the end of June, and whilst there have been reports that an extension is close to being agreed, it has also been reported that wages could be a snag in the negotiations.
