Juventus are working to identify the fans who were responsible for racially abusing Inter striker Romelu Lukaku during Tuesday evening’s Coppa Italia semifinal first leg match.
This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, who report that the Bianconeri are looking at all available footage surrounding the scandalous incident in order to identify those responsible, and that stadium bans could be handed out.
The racial abuse hurled at Lukaku from the stands during Tuesday’s match has been recorded on video, although this does not mean that the culprits have yet been identified.
For this, it will be necessary for the Bianconeri to identify which of their supporters were the ones making the chants, which included “monkey chants” and racially derogatory language.
According to Tuttosport, the Turin-based club are doing that.
The search is underway, with over 115 cameras at the disposal of the club, as well as a number of microphones which can be used to aid the Bianconeri’s investigation.
In parallel, there has also been an ongoing investigation underway from the FIGC (Italian FA) which has yielded some insights into what exactly happened during the racism scandal as well as the ensuing on-pitch brawl.
The FIGC investigators reportedly found that a majority of the Bianconeri fans present in the first tier of the Tribuna Sud section at the Allianz Stadium had been involved in at least some of the racist chanting, which could make the investigation by Juventus more difficult.
In any event, the aim of the investigation could be for Juventus to hand out stadium bans to those fans responsible for racially abusing Lukaku.
According to Tuttosport, the Turin-based club make clear in the matchday tickets that they reserve the right to suspend any fans who are engaged in violent behaviour, which racist and discriminatory behaviour is considered to fall under.
