Sky Sport Italia transfer market expert Gianluca Di Marzio feels that it is virtually obligatory for Inter to extend the contract of defender Alessandro Bastoni following the 23-year-old’s outstanding performance against Benfica yesterday.

Speaking live on air, via FCInter1908, Di Marzio gave the suggestion that if the Nerazzurri hadn’t already considered securing the defender’s future with a new deal to be of the utmost priority, then they certainly will now.

Bastoni once again proved his worth to Inter with his performance against Benfica yesterday evening.

The 23-year-old was rock-solid in defense, and ambitious with his passing, most notably in the form of his assist for Nicolo Barella’s opening goal.

This comes amid some speculation about the defender’s future, as the Nerazzurri could reportedly decide to sell Bastoni this summer in the event that they cannot convince him to sign a new deal before the summer transfer, with his current contract running out at the end of June 2024.

The defender’s agent has made clear that Bastoni’s will is to stay at the Nerazzurri and that he’s open to signing a new deal.

However, Manchester City would be keen on signing the 23-year-old should he become available, whilst Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus are also monitoring his situation at the Nerazzurri.

Accordingly, the Nerazzurri will know full well that if they want to secure Bastoni’s future, they must do so sooner rather than later, whilst the fact that he is playing as he has been particularly in big matches, the interest in him from some of Europe’s elite will hardly diminish.

Di Marzio noted that “I saw Bastoni smiling a lot after yesterday’s match.”

“There’s still the dynamic behind the scenes surrounding his contract extension, now it is a must for Inter to extend his deal,” he continued.

The Sky transfer market expert then noted that “Bastoni’s agents were also present at the match.”
