Inter Milan are actively discussing the possibility of extending the contract of Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, as reported via Milan based Inter Milan newssite FCInterNews.

According to the report, discussions between the Nerazzurri and the 31-year-old former Lazio defender are still ongoing. As things stand, de Vrij’s contract with Inter runs out at the end of next month.

It is unclear if the Nerazzurri will agree terms with the Dutch international defender. Should the parties not come to an agreement on an extension, de Vrij will leave on a free transfer.

Villarreal have reportedly offered the 31-year-old a contract for next season to replace ex-Napoli and Real Madrid defender Raul Albiol.

Meanwhile, all of Atletico Madrid, Leicester City, and Aston Villa are reportedly interested in signing de Vrij.

However, it is still very much possible that the Dutchman could decide to extend his contract with Inter.

In this sense, the coming weeks will be decisive, as the negotiations continue.

Contract Talks Not Yet Concluded Between Inter & Stefan De Vrij

A few weeks ago, it was reported that Stefan de Vrij had accepted a contract extension offer from Inter.

However, it now looks less certain that the 31-year-old will put pen to paper on a new deal. The report add that as of date no agreement exists between the parties.

De Vrij is aiming for a new two-year deal worth around the same €4 million net per season he currently earns. However, the Nerazzurri are hoping to agree a contract at lower wages.

De Vrij joined Inter from Lazio in the summer of 2018, arriving on a free transfer when his contract with the Biancoclesti expired.

So far, the Dutchman has made 199 appearances for the Nerazzurri. He has scored nine goals for the club.
