Inter Milan have lined up several transfer targets for the summer with the unexpected earnings they’ll receive from the Champions League.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper anticipate that Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah and Tigre and Italy striker Mateo Retegui are among the players the Nerazzurri could go after.

Inter’s earnings from the Champions League have already exceeded €85 million.

This comes from participation in the group stage and all the way up to the semifinals, plus the market pool. That is before the extra earnings from matchday gate receipts.

Furthermore, the Nerazzurri’s earnings could exceed €100 million in the event that they reach the final.

If Inter make their dream a reality by winning the final, their total earnings would come to around €110 million. This would include the revenues from participating in next season’s European Super Cup.

Given that the Nerazzurri have had to make up budgetary losses of €60 million during the fiscal year, these earnings give them a lot of unexpected financial wiggle room.

Chelsea & Ex-Man City Defenders On Inter Milan’s Radar With Champions League War Chest

One of Inter’s main priorities in the summer will be reinforcing the defense. Milan Skriniar is set to leave on a free transfer, and the Nerazzurri need a like-for-like replacement for the Slovakian.

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah is one of the Nerazzurri’s main defensive target.

A deal for the 23-year-old Englishman would certainly be within reach financially if Inter reach the Champions League final.

Also on Inter’s radar is Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo. Nerazzurri Sporting Director Piero Ausilio particularly admires the 25-year-old ex-Manchester City man.

Inter Milan To Go After Italy Breakout Star With Champions League Revenues

Tigre striker Mateo Retegui is another target for Inter this summer.

The Nerazzurri have been eyeing up the 23-year-old for some time as a major attacking target. However, the price tag for Retegui will be at least €18 million after he starred for Italy in the most recent international break.

According to the Gazzetta, however, Inter can go after the striker now that they’ve brought in extra cash from the Champions League.

Key Renewals Of Inter Stars Also On Deck

The Gazzetta also reports that Inter are planning to use their Champions League revenues to expedite contract extension talks.

Most notably, there is the situation of defender Alessandro Bastoni.

The 23-year-old’s current deal with Inter runs out at the end of June 2024. However, the Nerazzurri want to tie Bastoni down on a new deal long before then to avoid another Milan Skriniar situation.

According to the Gazzetta, if money were tighter, there would be a real risk of losing Bastoni. However, Inter can now act freely and offer the star defender a new deal close to what he’s asking for.

Sale Of Chelsea Target Andre Onana Still Not Ruled Out

The Gazzetta also note that the financial boost from the Champions League revenue means that Inter will not necessarily have to make a big sale this summer.

Whilst it had been expected that the Nerazzurri would have to cash in on a high-value player to make up for losses, these have been covered.

Nevertheless, a big sale can hardly be precluded. Rather, if the Nerazzurri were to sell a player it would be for more strategic reasons.

Premier League giants Chelsea continue to target Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Whilst finances will no longer force Inter to sell a player like the Cameroonian, they could listen to offers. Onana arrived on a free transfer from Ajax last summer, and Chelsea may already be ready to break the bank to sign him.
