Henrikh Mkhitaryan is set to start for Inter Milan in this evening’s Champions League clash with AC Milan.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the 34-year-old former Arsenal and Roma midfielder is favourite over Marcelo Brozovic to start in midfield in the semifinal second leg.
According to the Gazzetta, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi’s mind is largely made up regarding the starting eleven tonight.
The coach has only one decision left to make. Either of Mkhitaryan or Brozovic could start in midfield.
According to the Gazzetta, however, the coach is very much leaning in a direction. The newspaper anticipate that the Inter starting lineup will be unchanged from the first leg.
This means that Mkhitaryan will start in a midfield trio along with Nicolo Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu. Meanwhile, Brozovic, who started against Sassuolo over the weekend, will begin on the bench.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan Continues To Be Everpresent In Inter Milan Lineup
Former Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund man Mkhitaryan has been everpresent for Inter this season.
The Armenian joined from Roma on a free transfer last summer. Whilst Mkhitaryan had been expected to be more of a squad player, he has started the vast majority of the Nerazzurri’s matches so far this season.
Particularly in big matches, Mkhitaryan has been trusted. The 34-year-old has tended to comprise the starting trio along with Barella and Calhanoglu.
Meanwhile, Brozovic missed big chunks of the season through injury. Whilst the Croat was absent, Calhanoglu emerged as the first-choice holding midfielder in big matches.
Elsewhere on the pitch, the Gazzetta predict that Romelu Lukaku will be benched as Edin Dzeko starts once again in the derby.
The newspaper’s complete predicted Inter starting eleven is as follows:
Inter (3-5-2): Onana; Darmian, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Dzeko, Lautaro.
