Samir Handanovic is set to start in goal for Inter Milan in the Coppa Italia final against Fiorentina on Wednesday.

This according to Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it, who report that the Nerazzurri captain will be given the nod between the posts ahead of Andre Onana.

Handanovic has not been first-choice in Inter’s goal for most of this season.

The Slovenian had began the season as the regular starter, during the bedding-in process for Onana. However, it didn’t take the Cameroonian long to find his feet following his summer arrival from Ajax.

In the fall, Onana quickly made the starting spot in goal his own.

The 27-year-old has been a crucial player for Inter this season, particularly in the Champions League.

However, this has not meant that Handanovic has been without his chances to start. The 38-year-old has started against the likes of Spezia, Empoli, and Sassuolo in Serie A among others.

Moreover, Handanovic had started in the Coppa Italia semifinal first leg against Juventus. However, the Inter captain was suspended for the second leg due to being red carded for an altercation with Bianconeri wide man Juan Cuadrado.

Samir Handanovic To Be Given The Nod In Inter Vs Fiorentina Clash

Nerazzurri captain Handanovic still has the full faith of his coach Simone Inzaghi.

The Slovenian is an experienced figure and an important figure in the dressing room. Moreover, the captain has played a key role in getting Onana settled in so quickly.

Accordingly, the coach will reward his captain with a start against Fiorentina. Handanovic could win one more piece of silverware as a starter at Inter.

Meanwhile, the only other change that the Gazzetta anticipate to the team that beat AC Milan in the Champions League last week is in midfield.

A thigh injury to Henrikh Mkhitaryan means that Marcelo Brozovic will start. The Croat will comprise a midfield trio along with Nicolo Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu.
