Inter Milan could move to sign Italy and Tigre striker Mateo Retegui even in the event that Romelu Lukaku stays.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper report that Retegui is a major target for the Nerazzurri irrespective of Lukaku’s future.

Young Italy breakout star Retegui is one of Inter’s main targets in attack for this summer.

The 23-year-old’s outstanding goalscoring form with Tigre in the Argentine top flight, and with the Italian national team during the most recent international break, have marked him out as a player with a player with a future in Europe in the not too distant future.

Inter look to be front of the queue. The Nerazzurri have made their interest clear, and the newly-minted Italian international would welcome the move.

However, Inter’s interest in signing Retegui could be linked to the future of Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgian could well be back at Chelsea next season. Inter CEO Beppe Marotta has confirmed that the 30-year-old will go back to Stamford Bridge, and then it will be up to the clubs to discuss a potential new loan deal for him beyond the summer.

Inter Could Pair Mateo Retegui & Romelu Lukaku Next Season

According to the Gazzetta, however, Lukaku departing would not be a necessary condition for Retegui arriving.

Rather, the newspaper reports, the Nerazzurri would still consider a move for the latter even if the former stays.

The fact that Inter are in the final of the Champions League has given the club an unexpected financial windfall. This would allow them some wiggle room in their summer planning.

Accordingly, the Nerazzurri could target Retegui even if Lukaku remains.

The 23-year-old is one of the club’s main targets to directly replace Lukaku. However, he could also join and form a tandem with the Belgian next season.
