Legendary former Inter Milan President Massimo Moratti feels that Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez should be the strikers to start in the Champions League final against Man City.

Speaking to Italian news outlet FCInterNews, the ex-President gave his thoughts on who should start in Istanbul.

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi will have a choice to make in attack in each of the Nerazzurri’s final four matches.

The coach has taken a very specific approach in recent matches. Martinez and Dzeko have started in midweek. Then, on the weekend, it’s been the turn of Romelu Lukaku and Joaquin Correa.

However, Lukaku has also been making a real case for himself to figure more prominently. The Belgian put in a MOTM display against Sassuolo, whilst he also scored in a recent 1-3 loss to Napoli.

On the other hand, though, Dzeko seems to be back to his best, particularly in big matches. The Bosnian former Manchester City man put in an outstanding performance against AC Milan in the Champions League semifinal first leg.

Moratti Backs Dzeko & Lautaro To Start Vs Man City

For his part, Moratti has given his backing to Dzeko to win out the battle with Lukaku. The former President also anticipates that Martinez will be the man to start the final.

Asked who he’d start in the Coppa Italia and Champions League finals, Moratti replied that “Dzeko-Lautaro have done so well recently that I wouldn’t touch them. I’d let them play together.”

“Lukaku is growing a lot, he’s very useful and could still contribute coming off the bench,” he continued.

Moratti also gave his thoughts on the Nerazzurri’s reported pursuit of Davide Frattesi and Giorgio Scalvini.

“At Inter there’s a strong Italian base, looking at Barella and the other players,” the former President said.

“But you have to be careful, and this is just a general statement – playing for Inter is not like playing for a provincial side.”

Moratti was also tight-lipped regarding the departure of Milan Skriniar.

He called it “A situation that I don’t know about, it went the way it went.”

“It means that they were unable to find an agreement on both sides. I can’t interfere.”

The former President also asked what he expects from the final against Manchester City, replying “Anything.”

“If Inter are to express themselves the way they did in the first few minutes against Milan, it will honestly be difficult for Manchester City,” he added.

“I have to say that I expect it to be an open match.”
