Inter Milan have agreed a two-year contract extension with defender Stefan de Vrij, who will sign his new deal soon.
This according to Sky Sport Italia transfer market expert Gianluca Di Marzio, who reports on his homepage that only the signatures and official announcements are left, as the 31-year-old Dutch international has fully agreed terms.
De Vrij’s current contract with Inter runs out at the end of this month.
The Dutchman would therefore be able to leave on a free transfer were he to decide not to sign a new deal.
Were de Vrij to decide not to accept an offer from Inter and leave on a free transfer, Villarreal have been strongly linked as a destination.
Meanwhile, Premier League giants Manchester United have been linked with the Dutchman. Two other English teams have also reportedly shown interest, in the form of Aston Villa and Leicester City.
French team Marseille have also come forward with interest.
However, it looks clear that de Vrij will instead decide to remain at his current club.
Inter Milan On The Verge Of Extending Contract Of Stefan De Vrij
As of yet, nothing has been made official. De Vrij has yet to put pen to paper on a new contract.
However, it won’t be very long.
As Di Marzio notes, Inter held a meeting together with coach Simone Inzaghi earlier this afternoon.
The club hashed out their plans for next season. This included discussion of the transfer strategy, as well as of the squad more broadly.
Inzaghi, who had previously worked with de Vrij for two seasons while coaching Lazio, is happy to keep the 31-year-old on.
Even though de Vrij lost his first-choice status in defense to Francesco Acerbi over the season just gone, he still has an important role in the team going forward.
De Vrij joined Inter from Lazio in the summer of 2018. He has made a total of 203 appearances for the Nerazzurri to date.
