Inter Milan linked midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic could stay at Lazio this summer and then depart on a free transfer in twelve months’ time.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the Biancocelesti won’t likely sell the 28-year-old this summer unless the right offer arrives, even if this means losing the player for free.

It has looked likely that Milinkovic-Savic will leave Lazio this summer.

The reason for this is the Serbian international’s contract situation.

Milinkovic-Savic’s current deal with the Biancocelesti runs out at the end of next June. The player has reportedly made clear that he will not be signing an extension.

Therefore, if Lazio don’t sell Milinkovic-Savic then there would be a very high risk of losing him for free next summer. This summer transfer window could represent the last chance for the capital club to cash in on the former Genk midfielder.

Inter Target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic Could Stay At Lazio Another Season Then Leave For Free

According to the Corriere, however, it is not yet a foregone conclusion that Lazio will sell Milinkovic-Savic.

This is because they are not intending to offer any cut-price fees. If teams make the Biancocelesti any low-ball offers in the hopes of capitalizing on Milinkovic-Savic’s contract situation, these will face rejection.

The Corriere report that Lazio’s aim is to sell Milinkovic-Savic for around €30-40 million.

Should an offer this size not arrive before the end of the summer, then they could very well hang on to the player.

And so far, no team has taken the plunge.

That is not for lack of interest. Inter coach Simone Inzaghi would reportedly love a reunion with the Lazio star at Inter.

The Nerazzurri’s Serie A rivals Juventus are reportedly also keen.

Meanwhile, from the Premier League the likes of Newcastle United and Arsenal have also been linked with the 28-year-old.

The Corriere also note that there have been rumours of a €30 million Chelsea offer. However, so far denials have emerged from Lazio.

In any event, if for one reason or another no teams make an offer large enough for Milinkovic-Savic, he could stay another season in the Italian capital.

Then, in all likelihood, the Serb would leave the Stadio Olimpico next summer for nothing.
