The delayed return of Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer could hold up the transfer of goalkeeper Yann Sommer to Inter Milan.

This according to German broadcaster Sky Sports Deutschland, via FCInterNews, who report that with Neuer not ready to re-join the Bayern squad ahead of their preseason tour of Asia, the status of Sommer’s sale is very much up in the air.

Inter don’t want to waste time in wrapping up a deal to sign Sommer from Bayern.

The Swiss international is a priority target for the Nerazzurri to replace Andre Onana who is close to joining Manchester United.

With Onana’s transfer to United now just one step away, Inter are ready to move for Sommer. Reports suggest that the Nerazzurri have been aiming to finalize the deal as early as the next couple of days.

However, the fitness of Neuer may well be a hitch in their efforts to do so.

How Delayed Return Of Manuel Neuer Could Be A Problem For Inter Milan Chase Of Yann Sommer

Sommer only joined Bayern from Borussia Monchengladbach during the January transfer window.

The Swiss international was essentially an emergency signing. The Bavarians brought him in as injury cover for Neuer, who had broken his leg during the World Cup break.

The expectation was always that the captain Neuer would reclaim his first-choice spot in goal once he was back.

However, the 37-year-old is still not back. Sky Deutschland report that Neuer will not be part of Bayern’s squad for their upcoming tour of Asia.

Therefore, there are big questions about the German’s readiness for the upcoming season.

This could very well change Sommer’s situation at Bayern. The 34-year-old may be seen as the first-choice option for the start of the season.

In that case, Sommer could decide to stay at Bayern where he would continue to receive regular playing time while Neuer recovers.
