Legendary former Nerazzurri defender Marco Materazzi believes that striker Lautaro Martinez deserves to be Inter Milan captain.

Speaking to Soccerking, via FCInterNews, Materazzi called Martinez a “driving force” for this Nerazzurri team, and argued that he is a great candidate to wear the armband accordingly.

Next season, Martinez will be the player who wears the captain’s armband for Inter.

Last season, it had been Samir Handanovic with those duties. However, the Slovenian left Inter after more than a decade during this summer.

Therefore, choosing a successor in the captain’s role has been a vital task of the summer transfer window.

Martinez always looked to be a fairly natural fit for the role.

The 25-year-old had already worn the armband on a number of occasions last season.

And, despite his age, Martinez has already been an Inter player for five years, having joined in the summer of 2018.

On the pitch the Argentine is one of Inter’s key players. His goals, linkup play, and defensive workrate are all key to making the Nerazzurr tick.

Moreover, Martinez has emerged as a leader both on and off the pitch.

And on top of this, Martinez has shown loyalty to Inter during the past few years, despite transfer interest from some of Europe’s elite.

Premier League giants Arsenal, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur have all targeted the Nerazzurri striker in the recent past.

Barcelona and Manchester City have also chased Martinez during his time at Inter.

Materazzi Believes Lautaro Martinez Deserves Captaincy Of Inter Milan

Materazzi argued that “He has to do what he did last season. Being the captain doesn’t just mean wearing the armband, you also have to be a leader.”

“For many years Inter had a captain, Zanetti, who was more of a silent driving force,” he added.

“Lautaro is more calm, but he’s a driving force too. He deserves to be the captain.”
