Monza CEO Adriano Galliani has confirmed that wingback Carlos Augusto asked for his transfer to Inter Milan this summer.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, via FCInterNews, the Brianzoli executive also gave the view that the 24-year-old deserves to be playing in the Champions League next season.

Barring late surprises, Augusto should become an Inter player soon.

The Brazilian will make the switch as Robin Gosens heads for the exit door at the Nerazzurri, leaving to join Union Berlin.

Augusto makes for a fairly natural replacement for Gosens. The 24-year-old was one of Monza’s outstanding performers in Serie A last season, popping up with six goals and five assists for the Brianzoli as they achieved an impressive midtable finish.

As Monza executive Galliani confirms, however, Augusto decided that he wanted a move to a bigger club.

And, the CEO makes clear, joining Inter was the specific request of the player.

Galliani notes that the fact the Nerazzurri will be playing Champions League football next season played a big role in Augusto’s decision.

The likes of Juventus, Fiorentina, Atalanta, and Torino all reportedly came forward with an interest in signing Augusto this summer.

However, none of that are in the Champions League next season.

Galliani Confirms Robin Gosens Wanted Inter Milan Move

Galliani noted that “He’ll be with me in the stands [of Monza’s Coppa Italia clash with Reggiana this evening].”

“We still have a fantastic relationship,” he continued of his rapport with Augusto.

“We had to give the player what he wanted though,” Galliani continued. “He wasn’t trying to make money for himself or his agents. But he was one year away from the end of his contract and we had a decision we had to make.”

“We had to choose whether to sell him this summer, or keep him and lose him on a free transfer in twelve months.”

Galliani admitted that “I’m sorry to see him go, like all the other fans are, but there wasn’t much else we could do in the situation.”

The CEO noted that “He chose Inter because they play in the Champions League.”
