Thomas Tuchel admits that the sale of Benjamin Pavard to Inter Milan is “like losing two players” for Bayern Munich.

Speaking in a press conference after the Bavarians beat Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga, as reported by FCInterNews, the German gave a frank assessment of the departure of the Frenchman to the Nerazzurri.

Last week, Pavard made the switch from Bayern to Inter.

The Nerazzurri had been aiming to wrap up the deal for more than a week.

And for his part, Pavard always made his desire clear. The Frenchman was hoping to make the switch to Inter.

But for Bayern’s part, there was some reluctance.

Only in the final days of the summer transfer window did the German champions give the go-ahead for Pavard to join Inter.

The reason for this reluctance on the part of Bayern concerned the fact that they were trying to sign a replacement.

Tuchel in particularly reportedly opposed Pavard’s sale. The former Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Borussia Dortmund was not happy with the idea of losing a player of Pavard’s quality, and with the replacements that Bayern lined up.

The fact that Bayern didn’t end up signing a replacement for Pavard has certainly presented an issue for Tuchel.

The Bavarians ended up giving in and allowing the former Stuttgart defender to join Inter.

But their efforts to sign a like-for-like replacement failed.

And as Tuchel notes, this not only leaves them without an option in one single position. Pavard’s ability to cover both in the centre of defense and wide on the right is something they now miss.

“In attack we have virtually two players in every position,” Tuchel noted.

“But then in defense, it’s different. We had Laimer covering at right-back in the second half, and then he even risked a second yellow card.”

Speaking to German broadcaster Sky Sports Deutschland, Tuchel made himself even clearer.

“In losing Benjamin Pavard, it’s like losing a player in two positions,” the coach said.
