The fitness of AC Milan and French international striker Olivier Giroud will be monitored in view of next weekend’s Serie A derby clash with Inter Milan.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper anticipate that more information about the Frenchman’s condition should become clear on Tuesday.

Giroud, who is France’s all-time leading goalscorer, started for Les Bleus against Ireland on Thursday evening.

However, the 36-year-old had to come off as a substitute during the first half of the match.

Inter striker Marcus Thuram replaced Giroud in the 26th minute of the EURO 2024 qualifying match. The Nerazzurri man went on to score France’s second goal of the match.

The reason that Giroud had to come off was that he was experiencing some pain in his ankle.

And the French medical team conducted tests to see what the problem was.

According to the Corriere, the prognosis for Giroud is a mild sprain. The tests did not detect a serious problem.

However, the former Arsenal and Chelsea striker could still miss next Saturday’s Milan Derby due to injury.

Fitness Of Olivier Giroud Monitored Ahead Of Milan Derby

According to the Corriere, Giroud will undergo new medical tests on Tuesday of this week. Although as stated the injury isn’t serious, these tests will determine if Giroud can start or partake at all in the derby.

Then, Giroud can try and return to full training.

These sessions in the couple of days leading up to the derby should be crucial in determining whether Giroud will be ready for the derby, which is Milan’s first match back from the break.

If Giroud cannot play in the derby, then the Rossoneri could be relying on summer signing Luka Jovic. The Serb essentially signed as a replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic to back up Giroud.
