AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli doesn’t feel that the 5-1 loss to Inter Milan in the derby takes anything away from the quality of his squad.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN after the match, via FCInterNews, the Rossoneri coach gave his reaction to what was a very heavy defeat for his team.

Prior to this evening’s derby match, many had marked the clash between Inter and Milan as a match with potential Serie A title implications.

The two city rivals were, after all, the two teams to have enjoyed perfect starts to the season.

There was a sense that this would be a balanced match.

And yet, the scoreline told a different story in the end. The Nerazzurri put five goals past Milan keeper Mike Maignan.

Inter kept their perfect start to the campaign going, whilst they made sure that the Rossoneri’s came to an end.

But for Milan coach Pioli, there is no point dwelling on this setback or reading too much into it.

The coach believes that, regardless of the final result this evening, he still backs his squad completely.

AC Milan Coach Stefano Pioli Reacts To Derby Loss Vs Inter Milan

Pioli admitted that “The match went the way they wanted it to.”

“Then it gets tricky to try and get it back under control.”

“I made my substitutions, and we conceded the penalty right away,” Pioli noted.

“Inter are a strong team, but we’re strong too,” the Milan coach argued.

“We can still compete for the league title, and for the top spots in the table.”

He argued that “Today’s result doesn’t take anything away from the quality and depth of my squad.”

And of Inter’s first goal, Pioli didn’t choose to stoke any refereeing controversy after the Rossoneri players had appealed for the goal to be ruled out for a possible foul by Denzel Dumfries on Theo Hernandez in the buildup.

“No comment, the coach said. “The referee decided what he decided.”
