Inter Milan Vice-President Javier Zanetti feels that there is a mutual will to continue on with striker and Nerazzurri captain Lautaro Martinez.

Speaking to reporters, via FCInterNews, the Nerazzurri executive gave a positive update regarding a prospective new contract for the Argentine.

By all accounts, Inter are determined to extend the contract of their captain Martinez.

The reasons why are not exactly a mystery.

Martinez has become an absolutely key figure for this Inter team.

The 26-year-old has been the Nerazzurri’s top scorer in each of the past two seasons. And with fourteen goals to his name already this season, it seems very likely that he’ll do so again.

Meanwhile, Martinez provides far more to Inter than just his goals.

The Argentine is the player who sets the tone for this Nerazzurri team with his pressing and linkup play.

Martinez is also a leader, on and off the pitch. That is why he inherited the captain’s armband from Samir Handanovic in the summer.

And Martinez has also shown real loyalty to Inter over the past few years.

There has also been persistent transfer interest in Martinez. The likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur have all targeted the Inter striker in the past couple transfer windows.

Barcelona and Manchester City have also chased Martinez during his time at the Nerazzurri.

But Martinez has always decided to stay at Inter.

Inter Vice-President Javier Zanetti Gives Positive Lautaro Martinez Contract Update

As far as whether Martinez could follow in his lead as a symbol and leader of Inter, Zanetti said that “Everyone has their own path. Their own personality.”

“I hope so because what I experienced with Inter was a fantastic story,” he went on.

“And I would really like for Lauti to be as happy here as I was.”

And as far as whether he is positive about the possibility of a new contract for Martinez, Zanetti said “Yes, let’s say that.”

“Marotta has already said it,” he noted.

“We’re a very united team, including off the pitch.”

“And everyone gives their contribution, always thinking of the good of Inter.”

Zanetti stressed that “I believe that at this moment Lauti is in a very important present for us.”

“And when we have to talk about a contract extension for him, it will certainly be everyone’s intention to continue together.”
