Legendary former Inter Milan goalkeeper Ivano Bordon feels that current Nerazzurri shot-stopper Yann Sommer is similar to Samir Handanovic.

Bordon spoke to Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInterNews, praising the impact that Sommer has made.

Inter went with Sommer to be their new goalkeeper during the summer.

The Nerazzurri had a big job in signing a new shot-stopper.

Both Andre Onana and Samir Handanovic left during the summer transfer window.

The departure of Handanovic had always seemed inevitable, more a “when” than an “if.” He bowed out with a start in the Coppa Italia final against Fiorentina that Inter won.

Meanwhile Onana was the man Inter signed to replace the Slovenian.

Obviously taking the place of a player like Handanovic who had been a vital presence at Inter for more than a decade would be a tough task. But Onana looked up to it.

But Manchester United signed the Cameroonian for a huge fee, just twelve months after he arrived.

So Inter went back to the drawing board.

And the Nerazzurri decided to go with experience.

Inter brought in veteran Swiss international Yann Sommer on a free transfer. The 34-year-old signed after six months at Bayern Munich.

Inter Legend Bordon Praises Yann Sommer: ‘Similar To Samir Handanovic’

“I like him, he’s definitely a valid choice,” Bordon said of Sommer.

“I think they made the right move in signing him,” the former keeper went on. “And I’ve been saying that since they failed to sign Vicario or Trubin.”

“They signed an experienced goalkeeper, who gives the team security.”

Bordon highlighted Sommer’s “Tranquility, his attitude in goal, his positioning, his closing down.”

“He also seems agile and explosive to me,” he said of the former Bayern and Borussia Monchengladbacgh keeper.

“He’s a classic goalkeeper from before we started playing with out feet so much and building out from the back.”

And comparing Sommer to Handanovic, Bordon said that “I think the two are quite similar.”

“Therefore, you can see that the way they handle certain situations is very similar.”
