Carlos Augusto and Denzel Dumfries have won praise for their emphatic performances against Salernitana yesterday evening.

Today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, highlight the wingback pair’s key role in the 4-0 Serie A rout.

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi did not make that many rotations to his starting eleven yesterday.

But two notable changes that the coach did make came on the flanks.

Italian international duo Federico Dimarco and Matteo Darmian dropped out of the lineup.

And in their places came Augusto and Dumfries respectively.

This was not exactly a surprise to see. Inzaghi frequently changes things up in wide areas.

This is the case both in terms of in-match substitutions, and changes to the team from match to match.

The wingbacks have arguably the most physically demanding role on the pitch in the system of play that Inter use. They are heavily involved in both phases of play and at both ends of the pitch.

So changes on the flanks are a natural way to freshen up the team for Inzaghi.

Against Salernitana yesterday, that appeared to work perfectly.

Augusto & Dumfries Praised For Performances Vs Salernitana

On the left flank, Augusto showed his ability to burst forward into attacking positions.

This paid off as the Brazilian former Monza man assisted both of Inter’s opening goals. Strikers Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez benefited from excellent deliveries.

Whilst Augusto may not have quite the technical ability or range of passing that Dimarco does, the 25-year-old is more than capable of setting up his teammates.

Then, the Nerazzurri’s third goal of the match came from the other flank.

It was Dumfries who scored that goal to really start to put the seal on the result.

The Dutchman may not have started many matches for Inter in recent weeks. It has been Darmian who has gotten the nod over him.

There have been one or two questions regarding Dumfries’s fitness and physical condition.

But there was no lack of fitness of energy evident yesterday from the 27-year-old.

Dumfries, like Augusto, was a key outlet in allowing Inter to get in behind the Salernitana defense again and again.
