Former Atalanta, Juventus, and Rangers defender Sergio Porrini feels that AC Milan won the Serie A title when “only Inter Milan could have thrown it away.”

The 55-year-old spoke to Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport in an interview published in yesterday’s print edition, via FCInter1908.

This season, barring any truly massive shocks, Inter should finally win the Serie A title under Simone Inzaghi.

The Nerazzurri had looked on course to do so two years ago, though. That had been Inzaghi’s first season in charge.

At the start of February during the 2021-22 campaign, Inter had a significant advantage in the Serie A table.

But a major drop-off in form during the spring allowed city rivals AC Milan a way back into the title race.

Over the last few weeks of the campaign, it came down to a close race between the Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri.

The moment that proved to be decisive was a loss away to Bologna for Inter.

That had been the Nerazzurri’s game in hand. And a victory would have allowed Inzaghi’s team to take top spot ahead of their city rivals.

But Inter lost away in Emilia-Romagna. And Milan went on a big winning run to close out the campaign.

Therefore, the Rossoneri pipped Inter to the title on the final day of the season.

Porrini: AC Milan Won Serie A Title “Only Inter Could Throw Away”

“Pioli deserves credit for winning a title that only Inter could throw away,” former Juventus defender Porrini said of the 2021-22 season in Serie A.

“But he did very well in that season,” the former defender continued.

Porrini said of Pioli that “He has gotten them to some big objectives during his time in charge.”

And of links between Milan and former Inter and Juventus coach Antonio Conte, Porrini said that “Antonio has proven to be the man to bring clubs back to the top.”

“But he demands a top-level investment in the transfer market,” he continued.

“So he’ll ask for guarantees that the club will match his ambitions. But if Milan give him that, he could be the right man to bring them back to the top.”
