Inter Milan will need “personality” if they’re to stand up to the atmosphere playing against Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, argue that the Nerazzurri are superior to tomorrow’s opposition but must withstand a “hellish” away atmosphere.

Based on the pitch in the first leg of Inter’s round of sixteen tie against Atletico, the Nerazzurri would surely fancy themselves as favourites to go through.

Inter won that match by a 1-0 scoreline. But in truth it could have been more.

There were a few good chances for the Nerazzurri to score more. Atletico on the other hand did not muster a single shot on target.

Moreover, the two teams’ respective league form paint very different pictures.

Inter are on a dominant run at the top of the Serie A table.

Atletico, on the other hand, find their top four spot in jeopardy with Athletic Club just a couple points behind them.

Inter Milan Must Withstand “Hellish” Atmosphere Vs Atletico Madrid

The environment will mean that it won’t be quite so simple for Inter, though.

The first leg was played in front of the Nerazzurri’s fans at the San Siro. This was surely a boost for the team.

On the other hand, tomorrow evening Inter will be playing in Madrid.

The Metropolitano will have an intense atmosphere, something that Atletico’s fans are renowned for creating.

Colchoneros coach Diego Simone has earned a reputation for stirring up a passionate crowd response.

And this will be overbearing for the full ninety minutes. Particularly as Atletico gain any momentum, Inter will have to brush aside a very intimidating atmosphere.

There is no question that the Nerazzurri have the quality to see out their advantage and go through to the quarterfinals.

But there is an important test of character and “personality” on the way for Inter.
