Milan Mayor Beppe Sala feels that the San Siro is “home” for Inter and AC Milan, and that it would be difficult to lose the teams.

Speaking on an Instagram Q&A, via FCInterNews, the Milan Mayor made clear that it would cause a big headache for the city financially speaking if the teams were to leave the stadium to go elsewhere.

Sala is currently trying to convince Inter and Milan to stay at the San Siro.

The clubs, on the other hand, are oriented in the direction of building new stadiums elsewhere.

Inter and Milan had initially attempted to move forward with plans to demolish the existing San Siro. The club wanted to build a new stadium in its place.

In fact, these efforts lasted several years. But once it became abundantly clear that it will not be possible to obtain permission to demolish the stadium, the clubs changed course.

The Nerazzurri are working on plans in the commune of Rozzano. And the Rossoneri are doing so in San Donato.

Sala: San Siro Is Home For Inter & AC Milan, Leaving Would Be Financially Problematic For City

Sala argued that “It makes a lot of sense to renovate the San Siro.”

“Because it’s an historic stadium for football,” the Mayor continued. “And because it is home for the clubs.”

“With renovations, it is possible to do a lot of things better,” he argued.

“For example, I saw the Real Madrid museum at the Bernabeu. That is something that could be replicated at the San Siro.”

The Milan Mayor detailed the plans for renovations. “At San Siro, bathrooms, accessibility, and elevators need to be put in place,” he explained.

“Then, maybe we’ll add space outside the stadium for restaurants and commercial areas.”

“WeBuild is working on this matter, and will present a project in June.”

Sala said that “If it turns out that we can work without preventing the clubs from playing or making them play at a reduced capacity, then I will be even more insistent with them.”

“Because according to public rules I have to make a tender to protect the historical function of San Siro,” Sala said.

Sala then noted that “In the unfortunate event that the two clubs were to abandon the stadium, then we could devote it to other kinds of events.”

He remarked that “The stadium is old. But we can still work to improve it a lot.”

“The agreement with M-I Stadio ends in 2030. Therefore the teams are protected until that year.”

Sala said that “If they decide to go to San Donato and Rozzano, I must point out to them that I’ll need to find another solution.”

“Because then the Court of city Auditors will take me by the ear, because I won’t be properly getting value out of municipal heritage.”
